Membership

Garland Retired School Personnel is a local chapter of the Texas Retired Teachers Association. TRTA supports all current and future TRS retirees. Its members include retired public school teachers, aides, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, paraprofessionals, maintenance workers, librarians, nurses, counselors, and administrators. Some members come to every meeting. Some come to no meetings. Every membership provides needed support for TRTA.  No other group in the state advocates for retired public school personnel, and your membership supports those vital lobbying activities at the state level.

In 2023, the Texas Legislature unanimously approved a cost of living adjustment for most TRS retirees and some additional payments to older retirees. That constitutional amendment was approved by voters and received more supporting votes than any of the other amendments in that election. TRTA worked to make that successful from its creation in the legislature until its election and then went to work helping members understand how it would be implemented.

In 2024, TRTA's advocacy helped create a victory at the federal level with the repeal of the Government Pension Offset and the Windfall Elimination Provision. These had  penalized some federal benefits for many TRS retirees.

Whether you are currently working, are considering retirement, or are already there, there's a place for you in GRSP and TRTA. We also have members who are friends, family, and supporters of current or future TRS retirees.

All members pay $50 annually. This includes your local GRSP membership and membership in TRTA. Dues can be paid by cash, check, bank draft, Zelle, or through a monthly deduction from your TRS annuity. Click here for information about paying GRSP with Zelle.

For questions about membership, contact GRSP membership chair Ann Banks at 972-494-3604 or at annbanks9@msn.com.
